Edible Caricatures

I am sure when that you hear the words Edible Caricature the first thing that you think is:
“What on earth is all this about?”
It all started when I was on holiday with my family and, as you do, came across a caricaturist who had set up a small stand to catch the evening tourist trade. This caricaturist was very good and a crowd soon gathered to see what was going on and there was lots of laughter and oooh’s and wow’s.

In a eureka moment it came to me that if we could harness this excitement into one of our products we would be onto a winning formula and so the Edible Caricature was born. There were a few challenges along the way, first of all we had to find the best caricaturist (who was able to draw fantastic images from photos), then we had to find a way of getting suitable images of the subject to the artist (this was in the early days of email), then the caricature back to us, we then had to make an edible version and get this to the customer all in a timely fashion. Of course when it is needed for an important celebration, being late is not an option!

It took a while but we eventually overcame all these obstacles and was able to offer this service not only within a tight timeframe but at exceptional value as well. We had rave reviews and people told us it added an extra dimension to the humble birthday cake and was always a major talking point at any celebration.

I am going to have to admit that we did make one big mistake along the way. The problem was that a lot of people did not want to cut their cake and loose the fantastic artwork so (slightly red faced, as we had not thought of this problem) we offered a FREE hard copy so the lucky recipient could save it as a reminder of their great day.

Edible Caricatures have gone on to be one of our top sellers and we are proud of the fact that we brought these two great things together to make a lot of happy people.

Printed Chocolates

Photos on ChocolateWe at Eat Your Photo just love chocolate and being sure there are many of you out there that share our passion we decided that we must develop ways to get personalised images onto this exciting and super tasty product!

It has not been a simple task, if you were to print onto chocolate through the normal printing process, ie: using an off the shelf printer with liquid inks, then you would not have much success. Chocolate has a shiny surface (when tempered properly) which cannot absorb edible liquid inks, so the ink just stays on the top in liquid form and obviously will smudge and distort when moved/packed.
Photos on ChocolateSo we set to work developing a method to consistently put an image into the chocolate surface, this would of course mean that heat would have to be applied to break down the chocolate surface, then an oil based ink would need to be developed as a water based ink would not work, then it would need to set without any distorting of the image. As you have probably worked out this was not an easy or quick process and years of development followed.

We are now at a stage were all the problems have been solved and we have developed a perfect system for the addition of photos, drawings, logos, basically anything that can be printed on paper, can now add to chocolate! The possibilities are endless, add an extra dimension at any celebration, send a message with a chocolate gift or promote your business or product in a refreshing new way.

So head to our website eatyourphoto.co.uk chocolates and check out all our different shapes and sizes available and make your next occasion that little bit more exciting!

Birthday Cakes and our new Gift Cake!

Birthday cakes have been around a long time, in fact they have been an essential part of birthday celebrations ever since the 19th century in western culture and the use of candles for birthday celebrations on cakes dates back to Germany in the 18th century. The combining of a cake as part of a celebration has even been documented in Roman times.

So we’ve established that the birthday cake has been around for a while and we can be very confident in the fact that it will be around for a long, long time to come. Let’s face it, tucking into a delicious piece of cake for any celebration is now part of our DNA.

As with a lot of things in recent years the birthday cake has gone through a mini revolution and now there are all sorts of options available to the party planner. Back in the late 90’s Eat Your Photo was one of the first (if not the first) companies to bring a new technology into this U.K., the edible photo. This enabled the trade and home decorators alike to explore a whole new dimension in their craft and create detailed imagery of fantastic, photo quality images in a totally edible medium.

Here at Eat Your Photo we have developed a packaging system that has enabled us to offer our photo cake creations to people all over the country, delivered straight to their door for stress free party planning. We make them in a variety of sizes and flavours to suit every taste and we guarantee you will be totally satisfied.

Check out our new Gift Cake as well, the little cake that thinks BIG! Our smallest cake, but still packing in loads of delicious sponge, this little beauty is perfect for sending a message to someone, for any occasion at all. Home moves, new babies, graduation, birthdays, anniversaries, to say sorry, to say thank you, I love you, Valentines, Christmas, Easter, Mother’s day, Father’s day or just for fun. As they say, a picture says a thousand words, and when you add cake into the equation you are on to a sure fire winner!

Troubleshooting with Edible Photos

Edible Photos are really simple to use and 99% of the time you will wonder what all the fuss was about when you here:
“I had real trouble with my edible image, it just wouldn’t come off of the backing sheet.”
The simple fact is that 99% of the time the weather conditions UK are perfect (you’ve not heard that before) and your cake topper will just fall off its backing sheet and you will have no problem at all.

Without trying to cause alarm that there could be a problem I would like to prepare you for the 1% of the time when the weather does not play ball. The problem is when we suffer extreme humidity, the icing sheets are very thin and absorbent, and it is possible for them to absorb the moisture from the air and become much softer, this has the effect of making them stick to the backing.

As long as you are aware of the problem then there is no need to worry, if the icing sheet is sticking then we need to follow some simple steps. There are two different options, we can either dry the sheet (to extract the moisture) or we can freeze the sheet (to make the moisture solid).

Let us address the drying method first. To remove moisture we can either put it in a dry environment, an air conditioned room is excellent for this or we can apply heat which will cause the moisture to evaporate. Putting it in the oven on the lowest heat with the door open or applying a hairdryer directly onto the printed image will have the desired effect. Pull the sheet over the edge of a table, this will also help with the release.

The quickest method and the one that I favour is putting your edible photo in the freezer for about 20-30 seconds (do not leave it in any longer thinking it will stiffen more as the freezer is, in itself, a moist environment and leaving for prolonged periods will make the problem worse). This will make the icing photo stiff, you need to then bend the backing sheet immediately when taken out, the backing will bend and the edible photo will not and so they will separate. The tip with this method is to do it as soon as you get it out of the freezer (inside the freezer if possible) as when it is in the humid environment it will soon soften again.

Well I hope that helps and does not frighten anyone off as this problem is very rare and these few simple steps will sort everything out. The effects you can achieve with edible images are well worth the effort.

So happy baking!
